Anthropic has agreed to lease 460 megawatts of AI computing capacity from neocloud provider Nscale under a USD 45 billion contract spanning six years, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the agreement.

The deal adds another major commitment to Anthropic's rapidly expanding infrastructure footprint as the AI lab races to secure the compute resources needed to develop and run its models.

Details of the Nscale Agreement

The capacity Anthropic is leasing will be located at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia, a 2,250-acre site the company acquired in March 2026.

The contract will cover Nvidia Vera Rubin AI chips at the site, which are expected to come online late next year. The six-year term and USD 45 billion price tag make it one of the more significant individual compute capacity agreements disclosed to date.

The Monarch Compute Campus has been positioned as one of the more ambitious data center developments currently underway in the United States. The site carries the potential for up to 8 gigawatts of total capacity, with a first phase planned at 2 gigawatts expected to be online by the first half of 2028.

Power at the campus will be provided by Caterpillar's fast-response natural gas generator sets, specifically the Caterpillar G3500 series.

Anthropic is not the only major technology company to have committed capacity at the West Virginia site.

Microsoft has also signed on for 1.35 gigawatts of capacity there, for which Nscale is to set up a large-scale GPU deployment based on the Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs.

Anthropic's Broader Infrastructure Expansion

The Nscale deal is the latest in a string of large-scale compute agreements Anthropic has pursued as it seeks to keep pace with demand for AI infrastructure.

The company has reportedly signed more than a dozen letters of intent for data center leases with multiple US developers, and it is also looking to work with Google in an arrangement where the cloud and search giant would provide a financial guarantee for its lease payments.

That structure mirrors an arrangement Google already has in place with AI cloud provider Fluidstack. Beyond direct data center leases, Anthropic has committed to renting more than 10 gigawatts of servers from cloud providers.

That includes a USD 200 billion agreement signed with Google. The company has also previously signed large cloud capacity deals with Akamai, Amazon Web Services, including a substantial cluster of AWS's custom Trainium hardware, and CoreWeave.

An earlier USD 50 billion partnership with AI cloud firm Fluidstack was also among the commitments Anthropic has made.

The cumulative scale of these agreements illustrates the pace at which Anthropic is seeking to lock in compute resources, spanning both physical data center leases and cloud-based server arrangements with multiple providers simultaneously.

Nscale Prepares for IPO Amid Major Customer Wins

For Nscale, the Anthropic agreement arrives at a consequential moment for the company's own corporate trajectory.

The neocloud is currently preparing for an Initial Public Offering, with reports emerging in late August 2026 that it was hoping the offering would raise around USD 3 billion.

Securing long-term capacity commitments from major AI labs and hyperscalers is likely to underpin the financial narrative Nscale will present to prospective public market investors.

The Monarch Compute Campus sits at the center of that story. Nscale acquired the 2,250-acre West Virginia site in March 2026, and the campus has since attracted both the Anthropic and Microsoft capacity agreements.

The planned first phase of 2 gigawatts, targeted to come online in the first half of 2028, sets the near-term delivery timeline that both customers are working toward, with the Nvidia Vera Rubin chips expected at the site by late next year.

Nvidia Vera Rubin at the Heart of the Deal

The choice of Nvidia Vera Rubin AI chips as the hardware underpinning the Anthropic agreement reflects the continued centrality of Nvidia's GPU roadmap to large-scale AI infrastructure buildouts.

The Vera Rubin architecture also features in the Microsoft arrangement at the same West Virginia campus, where Nscale is planning a large-scale GPU deployment based on the Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs.

With both agreements relying on next-generation Nvidia hardware that has yet to reach the site, the delivery schedule for those chips will be a critical variable in whether the campus meets its stated timelines.

The 460 megawatts Anthropic is leasing represents a significant slice of the campus's planned first-phase capacity and positions the AI lab as one of the anchor tenants of what Nscale is developing into one of the largest compute facilities currently under construction in the United States.
