Liberty Energy and PowerBridge Form Joint Venture to Power 2 GW West Texas Data Center Campus
US energy firm Liberty Energy has entered into a joint venture with powered land and data center development firm PowerBridge to support the construction and operation of a major digital infrastructure project in West Texas, with initial power delivery targeted for the end of 2027.
The Joint Venture Structure
Under the terms of the agreement, Liberty Energy's subsidiary Liberty Power Innovations will be responsible for designing, developing, and operating scalable, modular power generation architecture for the data center campus.
The partnership brings together Liberty Energy's experience in delivering off-grid and behind-the-meter power solutions to the data center sector with PowerBridge's model of developing integrated powered campuses on large landholdings.
The joint venture represents a continued push by Liberty Energy into the data center power market. Founded in 2011 by current US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the company has signed several deals in recent years targeting the sector.
In January, Liberty Energy inked an agreement with Vantage Data Centers to deliver up to 1GW of power capacity over a five-year period, including a reserved 400 MW of generation capacity scheduled for 2027. Prior to that arrangement, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DC Grid to deliver off-grid gas generation to data center customers.
The Alpha Digital Campus
The joint venture is intended to support the development of PowerBridge's Alpha Digital Campus, a planned 2GW powered facility located in Reeves County, Texas.
The project was first announced in April and is slated to occupy 3,400 acres of land.
The campus is reportedly situated in close proximity to the Waha natural gas hub, a significant trading point for natural gas in the Permian Basin region.
The initial phase of development is expected to deliver 300 MW of generation capacity, with the option to scale the project over time to reach the full 2 GW target.
First power at the site is anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2027, with continued deployment expected through the first half of 2028.
PowerBridge's Origins and Leadership
PowerBridge was formed last year with the stated purpose of developing large-scale data center campuses on land owned by LandBridge.
The company is led by Alex Hernandez, who serves as its founder and chief executive officer. Hernandez previously held the role of founder and CEO at Cumulus Data and also served as CEO of Talen Energy.
Hernandez described his company's founding philosophy in terms of addressing the growing intersection between energy infrastructure and digital infrastructure.
"PowerBridge was founded on the premise of driving and solving the accelerating convergence between energy and digital infrastructure," he said.
"Our mission is to serve our digital infrastructure customers with an integrated powered campus solution while building new power generation assets that strengthen grid reliability."
Power Availability as a Development Constraint
Both companies framed the joint venture in the context of tightening power availability for data center developers, a constraint that has become increasingly prominent across the industry as demand from artificial intelligence workloads accelerates the need for large-scale compute infrastructure.
Ron Gusek, CEO of Liberty Energy, pointed to the challenge of securing reliable power as a central driver of the partnership.
"As power availability becomes a defining factor in data center development, customers need integrated solutions that align power generation, energy management, and campus infrastructure planning from the outset," Gusek said.

The framing reflects a broader trend in the data center industry in which developers are increasingly pursuing behind-the-meter and off-grid power strategies as grid interconnection queues lengthen and utility timelines extend.
West Texas, and Reeves County in particular, has emerged as a region of interest for such projects given its proximity to abundant natural gas resources at the Waha hub, as well as the availability of large tracts of land suitable for industrial-scale development.
Scale and Timeline
At 2 GW of planned total capacity across 3,400 acres, the Alpha Digital Campus ranks among the larger data center developments announced in recent years.
The phased approach, beginning with an initial 300MW before expanding toward the full capacity figure, mirrors a delivery model common among large campus developments where anchor infrastructure is built out first and subsequent phases are brought online as demand is confirmed.
The timeline set out by the joint venture places first power delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027, followed by continued deployment through the first half of 2028.
Liberty Power Innovations, the Liberty Energy subsidiary central to the deal, will carry operational responsibility for the modular generation architecture supporting the campus throughout that build-out process.
