Hedgehog USA Secures Long-Term Energy Supply Deal with Idemitsu for 600 MW Texas Data Center Campus
Hedgehog USA, a powered land data center developer based in Plano, Texas, has signed a long-term energy supply agreement with Japanese energy giant Idemitsu to support a planned data center campus in Navarro County, Texas, the company announced on July 21, 2026. The site is designed to support up to 600 megawatts of data center capacity by the end of 2027.
Behind-the-Meter Strategy at the Core
The agreement centers on what Hedgehog describes as a Behind-the-Meter power approach, a model in which power generation is located on or near the data center site rather than drawn from the broader utility grid.
Under the terms of the deal, Idemitsu will provide long-term energy supply solutions tailored specifically to large-load, mission-critical facilities, enabling Hedgehog to deliver energy-ready sites before construction begins.
Hedgehog's broader framework includes long-term natural gas contracts and full ownership of the property, including all mineral and surface rights, secured prior to any customer engagement.
The company describes this combination as creating a development-ready environment that offers operational independence and timeline certainty for prospective hyperscale and enterprise data center tenants.
John Happ, Chief Commercial Officer and Senior Vice President of Gas and Power Trading at Idemitsu, said the collaboration reflects the company's view that securing pipeline infrastructure and firm transportation capacity is essential to creating genuinely shovel-ready data center developments.
"The Idemitsu and Hedgehog collaboration exemplifies this approach by facilitating investment in pipeline capacity and related infrastructure in advance of the commercial operation date," Happ said.
Happ added that it is exceptionally uncommon for a landowner to make this level of infrastructure commitment ahead of development and suggested the approach could become an industry standard as Behind-the-Meter power solutions gain wider adoption across the data center sector.
Demand Drivers Shaping the Market
Both companies point to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure as the primary forces driving demand for data center capacity and intensifying competition for sites with access to scalable, reliable power.
Hedgehog's agreement with Idemitsu is structured to address what the company sees as the defining bottleneck in modern data center development: access to firm, long-term power.
Atul Anand, Delhi-based Co-Founder and Vice Chairman of Hedgehog USA, framed the deal within a broader global context, noting that energy certainty secured from the outset is what enables large-scale digital infrastructure development to proceed.
"We have built exactly the kind of platform that the world, and India, will need as the AI era accelerates. Firm commitments, ready land, no surprises," Anand said, adding that the company intends to explore how the model could be applied in India as well.
Idemitsu's Expanding U.S.
Footprint
Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. is one of Japan's largest energy and industrial companies, with operations spanning fuels, petrochemicals, high-performance materials, lubricants, renewable energy, and advanced energy services.
Through its U.S. subsidiary, Idemitsu Americas Holdings, the company has been expanding its presence in the American market with nationwide natural gas supply operations and is also exploring energy services for data centers that include immersion cooling, diesel backup support, and battery storage solutions.
The agreement with Hedgehog represents part of Idemitsu's strategy to position itself as a supplier to the growing data center sector in the United States, where power availability has emerged as one of the most significant constraints on new development.
Marathon Capital's Advisory Role
Marathon Capital is serving as the exclusive financial advisor for the sale of 100 percent of the Navarro County project, while also providing strategic guidance on development, commercialization, and market positioning.
The Chicago-based firm, which describes itself as the largest independent investment bank dedicated to the clean economy, has been operating for more than 25 years.
Gerry Willinger, Managing Director at Marathon Capital, said the firm's longstanding relationships across the energy ecosystem and understanding of power markets position it to help clients secure the energy solutions needed to scale.
"As AI and cloud computing drive unprecedented demand for data center capacity, access to reliable power has become the defining factor in project development," Willinger said.
Marathon Capital maintains offices in New York, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego, London, and Calgary, with local presence in Madrid and Seoul.
Navarro County Campus Scale and Timeline
The Navarro County campus is described as combining a large-scale development footprint with scalable power generation capabilities.
Hedgehog has set a target of supporting up to 600 MW of data center capacity by the end of 2027, a timeline the company says is made possible by securing energy supply commitments and infrastructure investment before construction commences rather than after.
Hedgehog's leadership team includes professionals with backgrounds in data center development, utility operations, and real estate.
The company characterizes its model as bridging the gap between power scale and institutional readiness, with the goal of giving prospective tenants absolute certainty over cost, operational independence, and development timelines.
