Model training and inference are being deployed at a scale the sector has not previously planned for. Rack densities exceed 100 kW in the most advanced facilities, against a 5 to 10 kW legacy norm, which multiplies electricity draw per square foot and forces liquid cooling, new substation capacity, and site selection built around firm power rather than fibre or real estate cost.
Grid interconnection has replaced land and construction cost as the binding constraint. Queue times now run to roughly ten years in Northern Virginia, five years in Chicago and Atlanta, and three years in Phoenix and Dallas. Lead times on transformers, switchgear and generator sets extend beyond twelve months, and community opposition is increasingly decisive at the zoning stage.
