Fit Energy announced on Oct. 6, 2026, plans for a combined fuel cell power generation and data center project in Newport Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Developer Targets Already-Disturbed Industrial Property for New Facility

The developer, which builds reliable energy solutions for data center projects, will situate the facility on land that has already been mined and quarried. According to the company, this choice returns previously used industrial property to productive use instead of consuming untouched forests or farmland.

The announcement followed a key regulatory step: Newport Township granted zoning approval in August 2026 for both the power generation and data center uses. Engineering work and the remaining permitting tasks are now underway ahead of construction.

Electrochemical Power From FuelCell Energy Under a Strategic Agreement

Electricity for the site will be produced on-site by natural gas fuel cells supplied by FuelCell Energy, Inc., a Connecticut-based manufacturer of utility-scale fuel cell technology.

The supply arrangement falls under a strategic agreement between FuelCell Energy and Fit Energy.

The fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical process rather than combustion, an approach the developer says operates quietly and helps deliver cleaner energy with minimal impact on the surrounding community.

On-site generation will also reduce the project's dependence on the regional power grid. Site design elements address neighboring properties as well.

The plan includes setbacks, landscaping, and screening intended to limit views of the site from nearby homes and local roads.

Fit Energy characterizes this as an approach that balances energy infrastructure needs with community character.

Utility Upgrades, Construction Work, and Permanent Positions

The project encompasses investment in power, natural gas, water, and sewer infrastructure. Beyond serving the site itself, that investment is expected to add to local utility capacity and stability.

Employment effects are projected across two phases.

Over a multi-year buildout, construction is expected to create significant employment and business opportunities for contractors, skilled trades, and suppliers.

Once the facility is operational, it is expected to support permanent skilled positions in operations, maintenance, security, facility management, and technology.

Fiscal benefits are also anticipated. The project is expected to generate new tax revenue for Newport Township, the local school district, and Luzerne County.

Township Officials Back the Development, Community Benefits Agreement Under Discussion

Fit Energy and Newport Township are working toward a Community Benefits Agreement, which would establish a formal framework for directing additional investment toward priorities identified by the community. Township leadership voiced support for the project.

"The Newport Township Commissioners have been proactive in their response to promote development in appropriately zoned sections of the Township that respects community input and promotes investments that create new jobs and new local tax revenue that enhance the quality of life for all Township residents," said Joe Hillan, Newport Township Manager.

"We recognize Fit Energy has made a significant commitment to this development, and we welcome the company's investment in our community and appreciate Fit Energy's willingness to work with the Township to address any and all community concerns," he continued.

Information Session Planned as Company Pledges Ongoing Engagement

Fit Energy says it intends to be an active member of the Newport Township community and to work closely with Township officials and residents through permitting, construction, and operations.

Among its planned outreach, the company will host a public information session where residents can review plans, ask questions, and hear directly from the project team.

Details of that session, the date, time, and location, will be announced on the website.

The same website will let residents submit questions, read answers to frequently asked questions, and follow project updates.

Chief Executive Officer Joel Leonoff emphasized the value of direct communication.

"A project like this is most successful when the community has the opportunity to hear directly from the people building it," he said.

"We're committed to being transparent, answering questions, and building a long-term relationship with Newport Township as we move through the next stages of this project."

Fit Energy's Business Model and Where to Find Project Details

Fit Energy describes itself as an energy infrastructure company focused on long-term ownership of generation assets, formed to deliver near-term, scaled energy solutions for the digital economy.

Its platform serves large power requirements through behind-the-meter, microgrid, and grid-connected structures, drawing on technologies that range from fuel cells to natural gas turbines.

More information about the company is available on their website, while specifics about the Newport Township project, including the forthcoming information session, can be found on their respective website as well.
