Armada Deploys 40-Foot Containerized Data Center to Grand Forks Air Force Base Drone Operations Hub
Edge data center company Armada has deployed one of its Triton containerized data center modules to GrandSky, a drone-focused operations and research center located at Grand Forks Air Force Base in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Bringing Edge Compute to a UAS Operations Center
The deployment places a 40-foot Triton unit, part of Armada's Galleon product line, at GrandSky, which was established in 2015 as the United States' first commercial unmanned aircraft systems flight operations center, research and development park, and UAS testing location.
The launch event was attended by US Senator Kevin Cramer, a Republican representing North Dakota. GrandSky described the capabilities the Triton unit now enables at the facility.
Customers can process sensor and aircraft data locally, deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, generate actionable insights in real time, and transmit only mission-critical information back to the cloud.
According to GrandSky, the Triton module connects aircraft, sensors, communications, compute, and mission data within a single operational environment, allowing customers to fly and evaluate systems, process data, run AI applications, integrate technologies, and demonstrate complete mission workflows under real-world conditions.
Armada's Galleon Line and the Triton Model
Armada was founded in 2023, and its Galleon line comprises portable, modular, and ruggedized data centers of various sizes and capacities offered as a turnkey solution.
The Triton model specifically delivers five racks of compute housed within a 40-foot container, measuring approximately 12.1 meters in length.
Armada co-founder and chief operating officer Jon Runyan framed the deployment in the context of accelerating AI infrastructure buildout.
"The AI race isn't even a once-in-a-generation race; it's a once-in-forever race. To win, we have to build and deploy AI infrastructure ahead of demand.
That's why today we brought Triton, our 40-foot Galleon, to GrandSKY, at Grand Forks, North Dakota," Runyan said.
GrandSky's Role in Unmanned Systems Development
GrandSky serves as a commercial hub for unmanned aircraft systems activity, combining flight operations, research, and testing functions in a single location on the Air Force base.
The facility's positioning as a testing and integration environment makes it a logical target for edge computing infrastructure that can support data-intensive drone and sensor operations without relying solely on distant cloud resources.
The addition of the Triton unit positions GrandSky to offer a more complete operational environment, one where tenants and visiting customers can carry out end-to-end mission workflows that span the physical operation of aircraft to the processing and analysis of the data those aircraft generate.
Separately, Grand Forks-based EdgeData LLC signed a letter of intent to construct a 16,000 square foot, one-megawatt data center at GrandSky in 2026, intended to provide data storage for tenants at the park. That facility would measure approximately 1,486 square meters.
A Growing List of Deployments and Backers
The Grand Forks deployment adds to an expanding portfolio of Armada installations and partnerships. The company has deployed or is set to deploy its modular units with a range of customers and partners including Nscale, UnityCloud, TampNet, Aramco, Newlab, Eclipse, the US Navy, and Alaska's Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
The breadth of those partnerships spans commercial cloud and enterprise customers alongside government and defense-oriented clients.
On the investment side, Armada counts Microsoft, BlackRock, and Johnson Controls among its backers, along with other investors.
The combination of major technology, financial, and industrial backers reflects the range of sectors that have identified portable, ruggedized compute infrastructure as a relevant capability.
Edge Infrastructure and the Demand for Local AI Processing
The GrandSky deployment is consistent with a broader trend in edge computing, where organizations operating in environments with limited connectivity or requiring low-latency processing are turning to modular, self-contained data center solutions rather than relying on centralized cloud infrastructure.
For unmanned aircraft systems operations in particular, the ability to process sensor data and run AI inference locally can be operationally significant, reducing the volume of data that must be transmitted over potentially constrained communications links.
Armada's containerized approach allows facilities like GrandSky to add substantial compute capacity without requiring the construction of a permanent, purpose-built data center building.
The Triton unit's turnkey nature means it can be operational relatively quickly after delivery, a characteristic that aligns with the kind of flexible, rapidly reconfigurable infrastructure that both commercial UAS operators and defense-adjacent facilities typically require.
