INNIO N.V. has announced a landmark order to supply approximately 1.1 gigawatts of gas engine capacity to an undisclosed developer and operator of mega-scale data center campuses, marking one of the largest contracts in the Munich-based company's history.

The order, announced July 28, 2026, was booked as equipment order intake in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. Deliveries are scheduled in phases, providing what the company describes as multi-year revenue visibility.

Scale and Scope of the Order

The 1.1 gigawatt order will be fulfilled through the deployment of more than 200 INNIO Jenbacher J624 engines across the United States.

The entire capacity is intended for behind-the-meter prime power generation, meaning the power produced will be consumed directly on-site by the data center campus rather than fed into the public grid.

INNIO stated that the order is expected to support the customer's expanding portfolio of projects. In line with what the company described as customary confidentiality practices in the data center industry, the name of the developer and operator has not been disclosed.

Why Gas Engines for Data Centers

INNIO positioned its Jenbacher J624 engine as specifically suited to meet the power demands of modern data center operations.

The company cited several attributes it says give the technology an edge over alternative power generation solutions, including superior power density, ease of transport, the ability to be containerized for fast deployment, more stable load-following characteristics, and lower redundancy requirements.

The company also pointed to the engine's ability to perform reliably under the demanding load profiles associated with artificial intelligence data centers, which are known to place intense and variable demands on power infrastructure.

Behind-the-Meter Power Gains Ground

Behind-the-meter power generation has emerged as an increasingly prominent strategy for large-scale data center operators seeking to insulate their operations from grid constraints, ensure reliability, and accelerate deployment timelines.

Rather than depending solely on utility connections, which can involve lengthy permitting and infrastructure build-out processes, operators are turning to on-site generation as a means of securing predictable, controllable power supplies.

INNIO described the deal as underscoring growing demand for reliable and flexible on-site power solutions across the data center sector.

The company, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker INIO, operates across approximately 100 countries and provides power systems under its Jenbacher and Waukesha brands for applications including data centers, microgrids, grid stabilization, and industrial energy.

Hydrogen Milestone and Sustainability Credentials

Alongside the commercial announcement, INNIO highlighted recent milestones related to its sustainability positioning.

The company stated it has received the EcoVadis Platinum Medal for the fifth consecutive year, a recognition it said places INNIO among the top one percent of all companies rated by the sustainability intelligence platform.

The company also referenced a separate technical achievement completed earlier in 2026.

In partnership with the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers, INNIO completed what it described as an industry-first demonstration of backup power for data centers using gas engines fueled entirely by 100 percent hydrogen. That demonstration was conducted at the three megawatt scale.

The hydrogen demonstration is notable given that the current 1.1 gigawatt order involves natural gas engines for prime power generation. The pilot points to a potential longer-term pathway for the underlying engine technology to operate on lower-carbon or zero-carbon fuels as hydrogen supply infrastructure develops.

Order Timing and Financial Significance

The equipment order intake associated with the deal was booked in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026.

INNIO described the booking as reflecting strong customer demand and continued momentum in the data center sector.

The phased delivery schedule means revenue recognition will be spread across multiple years, which the company said provides multi-year revenue visibility.
