AWS Plans $7 Billion Nine-Building Data Center Campus in Wheatfield, Indiana
Amazon Web Services is pushing forward on significant infrastructure investments, unveiling plans for a massive data center campus in a small Indiana town.
A Small Town, a Big Campus
Wheatfield, Indiana, is a community of roughly 900 residents located in Jasper County, southwest of Michigan City.
It is not an obvious destination for one of the world's largest cloud providers. Yet AWS presented plans at a recent open house held at Kankakee Valley High School, as per a report from the Kankakee Valley Post News, for a campus of up to nine buildings to be constructed on a 304-acre plot of land.
The land is currently owned by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, known as NIPSCO, and is leased for agricultural use from the utility.
NIPSCO and AWS are in active conversations regarding the project. A key factor driving AWS toward the site is its proximity to the Schahfer Generating Station, which sits just a half mile away.
According to AWS, locating the data center near the power plant would reduce costs associated with infrastructure and transmission.
Details remain sparse given that discussions are still ongoing, but AWS has put forward an estimated investment figure of around USD 7 billion for the project.
The company has also outlined the projected economic impact on Jasper County, stating that the development would increase local tax revenue from approximately USD 1.2 million to more than USD 420 million over the next 15 years.
In addition, Amazon said it would pay USD 1.25 billion to reduce the energy cost impact on local ratepayers.
On the environmental side, AWS stated the facility would rely on natural air cooling for approximately 98 percent of the year in order to minimize water usage.
AWS Frames the Partnership
Roger Wehner, AWS president of economic development, appeared at the open house meeting to address the community directly.
His remarks framed the project as one built on mutual interest and transparency. "We want to go to places where people come in with eyes wide open, and we can build a great partnership," Wehner told the gathering. He also addressed the timeline, indicating the company is eager to move quickly if the project receives approval.
"We want to start growing with this community as soon as possible.
As you can see, we're already here. We're already doing things. If it doesn't work out, that's okay; we'll still love it.
We won't feel bad about a single thing we've done," Wehner said.
Part of a Larger Indiana Commitment
The Wheatfield campus, if approved, would add to AWS's existing and developing footprint in northern Indiana.
The company already operates data centers in New Carlisle and is developing another facility in Hobart. Both projects fall under a USD 15 billion investment commitment AWS made to Indiana in November 2025, through which the company said it aimed to add 2.4 gigawatts of capacity to the state. Indiana has become an increasingly active market for data center development more broadly.
Meta, US Signals, DataBank, Netrality, and Digital Crossroads all have an existing presence in the state.
Microsoft has announced a data center build in Mishawaka, and Google has announced one in Fort Wayne.
